None of them carry a title. Whatever someone sees in it is theirs.

I have painted in acrylic since 2006. My works carry no titles, and I sign them wherever the painting tells me to. The meaning is placed there by whoever looks.

About
I started painting with my mother's brushes.
In 2006 I lost both my parents. My father, Alfonso Vélez Pliego, a historian, spent his life defending the cultural and architectural heritage of Puebla. My mother, Lilia María Iglesias García Teruel, was a recognised painter who left part of herself in every canvas she made.
When her brushes and palette knives came to me, I began giving shape and colour to what I felt. Since then, every time I pick one up she is present in it — I even think she moves it a little.
What inspires me is the dizzying way the world turns. I take the best and the worst of what surrounds us and turn it into images that try to say that, despite our differences, we can live together by appealing to what we share. We only have one world: there is room for all of us.

Why don't I title most of my work? Because it moves me that each viewer becomes part of it, makes it a little bit theirs through their own reading. The moment they read a title, I have already told them how to think.
Ana Vélez
I title only the pieces where I am trying to share one specific thought.

Process
Music, a stain-covered apron, and total surrender to the moment.
Painting is a ritual. I look at the finished canvas and it is the work itself that tells me where the signature belongs. That is why it is never in the same place.
